The forecast for Wednesday's League Meet is looking like it will be a tad on the warm side. Sunny and 86 degrees.
You can NEVER control the weather so it's pointless to worry about it. It's kind of like trying to move forward in a rocking chair. You can rock as fast/hard as you want, but you are never going to move forward. You can worry/complain about the weather but it's never going to change.
So what can you CONTROL that will increase your chances of racing well in warmer weather.
- Water Bottle. Always stay hydrated. Not just the day of, but always. Our bodies like a happy medium, so you want to continually drink water. Carry a water bottle and never get thirsty. Once you are thirsty you are to far away from your happy medium.
- Warm Up and Cool Down. We will cut down our Wednesday warm up and cool down to accommodate the weather.
- Race Strategy. It will be important to get out in a controlled manner and pick up the pace as the race progresses. Go out to hard and your body will not have a chance to adapt to the warmer weather and it will be hard to maintain pace.
- Post-Race Recovery. Many of you will be running multiple races. It will be important to get some water after your race, jog around right after, then get in the shade... get some more water and sports drink. Stay in the shade until your next race.
- Running Attire. This is why you see your coach running most runs in a layer (or two) more than the average runner. There is a difference between running and training. When going for a run you can wear whatever and be comfortable. When you are training you are trying to get your body to adapt to a new stimulus so it can perform at it's maximum. By having your body train in a warmer environment it will be better prepared to race in warmer conditions.
