10/11 Week Recap

A tardy recap to last week. I guess all I can say it was a busy week.

Thursday! East Lansing JV. It's always a place to run fast if the weather cooperates. It was too bad that some runners took a wrong turn in the boys 9th grade race. Unfortunately we will not be able to count those times. Aside from all the fast times everyone ran, I think the most important thing to take away from this meet is that when you want to run FAST you can. A lot of it is between the ears. Learn from this and know that you alone have the power to consistently run fast times.

Saturday! We were very competitive. The boys got out really well and we had a strong group up front. It's awesome to see Haslett getting after it. Because you got out FAST the first mile, many of you raced to PRs or very close to your PRs. We were 3rd for the 2nd year in a row. That is a testament to the strength of the program we are building here at Haslett. The girls also ran quiet well. We still feel that you are not allowing yourself to get out fast enough. Like we have said a million times... a 5k is a fast race. Once the gun is fired you are running fast. If you never get out fast you are never, ever going to run fast times. The first few times you do this it might not go so well after the first mile, but over time you will get stronger and more confident... and you will be able to maintain that pace. The top 10 runners at the mile are usually the top 10 finishers at the end. Places change a little over the course of a race... but someone in 25th place at the mile will most likely not win the race.

Keep up the great work Haslett as we head into some important meets over the next few weeks! As we head into our final Jamboree keep this in mind.
  • Get out towards the front of the pack the first mile. Not in the front, but towards the front. You just want to be in position so you can respond to The Break!
  • Be a "responder" in the race. When The Break happens... usually around mid-race, respond to it and go with it. Know that it will not last forever and the pace will settle back down after a short time.
