Developing America's Youth

http://www.running.net/read_feature/how-create-distance-champion-america-guide-those-working-young-athletes

A great read on the "right" approach to developing the young distance runners of America. I quote the word "right" because there is probably no one true right way to go about this complex endeavor... but Pete Rea's thoughts are definitely a road to take our youth down.

Seasoned distance runners who are in direct contact with the youth of our sport must encourage long term development. Convincing a "give me now" adolescent to think long term is by no means an easy task. Really it takes 10 or more years of consistent training at a progressively increasing high quantity. Yes quality does play a role in this complex puzzle, but like the article supports... if we encourage our youth to be on their feet PLAYING at a young age, their chances of developing into champion distance runner are going to be a lot better.
