Indoor Track Workouts?

Recently a couple people have asked a good question.

Why don't we run on the indoor track at MSU prior to running the indoor meets?

There are always pluses and minuses to a decision, and in the case of training on an indoor track as a high schooler the minuses out weigh the pluses.

At this point in the year (winter) we are focused on building strength to be able to handle the speed we will develop in the spring. The stronger we get now, the faster we will be able to train in the spring. If we were to go run on the indoor track the workout would probably focus on developing speed and that is something we do not want to focus on right now. If we were to do that, by the time spring came around we most likely would have nothing left.

Our winter training consist of long runs, progressions, hills, hurdle drills, calisthenics, strides/drills, and a few races. When you step on the indoor track to race you will be more prepared than anyone standing with you on the line... even if they have been running on the indoor track.

Not only is it crucial that you train HARDER than you competitors, it is also very important that you train SMARTER then them. We are doing both at Haslett.

Keep the questions coming and if anyone needs more clarification on that or anything else please let me know. stankona@haslett.k12.mi.us

Happy Running,
Mr. Stanko
